Date Krumm, who had already surpassed Safina in the first round of Roland Garros in May to become the oldest player to beat a Top 10, rebounded after a setback in the first set to prevail 4-6, 7 -6 (0), 6-2 after two hours and 22 minutes.

For its part Ivanovic, who is trying to regain his best, beat Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-2. Jankovic, a semifinalist in Brisbane and Roma this season, had lost three of their last four games to Kleybanova. Ivanovic, who received a special invitation, expected in the second round by the winner of the match between France's Bartoli, 4th favorite, and the American Harkleroad.

The only seed that saw action in the first day was Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, third favorite, who beat South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers and advanced to the second round. Radwanska, world number 11, won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 14 minutes, and second-round clash with American Jill Craybas or classified.

The Belarusian Olga Govortsova, ranked 43 in the ranking, made August 7 break chances to crush the Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-1 in 58 minutes. Govortsova now awaits the winner of the match between Maria Sharapova, 5th favorite and former world number one, and China's Jie Zheng.

While the Slovakian Dominika U.S. defeated Cibulkova Hilary Barte 6-2 6-2 and will intersect with the taiwanwsa Yung-Jan Chan and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Stanford WTA tournament is played on cement and distributed $ 700,000 in prizes.
